The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world."
~ International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO)
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) organises teaching and learning through eight subject areas:
- Language Acquisition
- Language and Literature
- Individuals and Societies
- Mathematics
- Design
- Arts
- Sciences
- Physical and Health Education
The programme promotes interdisciplinary study to helps adolescents make important connections between academic subjects and six global contexts:
- Identities and Relationships
- Personal and Cultural Identity
- Orientations in Space and Time
- Scientific and Technical Innovation
- Fairness and Development
- Globalization and Sustainability.
Integrated teaching and learning helps students analyse complex issues and develop the habits of mind they need to participate in our increasingly interconnected world.
The eight subject groups in the MYP that include Language and Literature and Language Acquisition are in many cases both discrete and integrated disciplines. They may be taught and assessed within a subject group and/or within a global context. At times the distinction between subject groups blurs to accommodate the interdisciplinary nature of the MYP and the subject areas, including Arabic are connected through global contexts and key concepts. For example, the UAE Ministry of Education Social Studies Standards will be incorporated within the six global contexts throughout the IB MYP at Fairgreen.
The excitement teachers and students feel when talking about learning in the MYP is frequently attributed to “the way the program invites thinking more deeply about what we know, when we consider the possibility of what is yet to be discovered.”
Each year the MYP includes one interdisciplinary unit involving at least two subject groups, one long term project that is externally moderated by the IBO, and one community service project, also monitored by the IBO.
Rigorous assessment in the Fairgreen MYP will provide IB-validated grades based on a combination of examinations and course work. Fairgreen will enter MYP students for external assessments to be certificated by the IBO, including extended assessment projects such as the MYP Personal Project.
