Sustainability Journey

Fairgreen International School Food Waste Impact Report – May 2026

Throughout May 2026, we continued our commitment to sustainability by diverting food waste from landfill through its food waste collection and composting initiative. Between 1–22 May, the school collected an impressive 119 kg of food waste, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact.

Key Highlights

  • 119 kg of food waste collected
  • 12 collection trips completed
  • 9 bins collected
  • 10 kg average food waste collected per day
  • Contamination rate of 6.7%

This positive trend reflects growing awareness and participation from students and staff throughout the month.

Environmental Impact

By diverting food waste from landfill, Fairgreen helped prevent approximately:

  • 98 kg of CO₂e emissions
  • 55 litres of gasoline consumption
  • 461 kilometres of driving emissions
  • Energy equivalent to charging 11,907 smartphones

Our Next Goal: Reduce Contamination

While the amount of food waste collected is something to celebrate, our contamination rate of 6.7% is above our target. To ensure that collected food waste can be successfully composted, we are aiming to reduce contamination to below 2%.

Our dedicated Waste Warriors will continue educating and reminding students to place only appropriate food waste into the collection bins. By taking a few extra seconds to sort waste correctly, everyone can help improve the quality of our collections and maximize our positive environmental impact.

Looking Ahead

The school's efforts generated an estimated 19 kg of compost, helping to return valuable nutrients to the soil and supporting a more circular approach to waste management.

Thank you to all students, staff, and families for supporting Fairgreen's sustainability initiatives. Together, we can continue reducing waste, improving our sorting practices, and making a meaningful difference for our planet.
