Duke of Edinburg Logo

At Fairgreen International School, we are proud to offer students the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) International Award – a globally recognised programme that helps young people develop life skills, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility beyond the classroom. The Award supports our mission to develop well-rounded, resilient and compassionate learners who are #worldready.

What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme open to students aged 14–24. It encourages young people to challenge themselves, discover new interests, and make a positive contribution to their community.

The Award is recognised by universities and employers worldwide as evidence of commitment, leadership, and personal growth.

The Four Core Components

Students complete activities across four sections, choosing goals that suit their interests and abilities:

1. Volunteering

Students give time to help others or improve their community.
Examples include:

  • Supporting local charities or community projects

  • Helping younger students

  • Environmental or conservation work

This section develops empathy, responsibility, and active citizenship.

2. Physical Recreation

Students take part in regular physical activity to improve fitness and wellbeing.
Examples include:

  • Team sports or individual fitness activities

  • Swimming, athletics, dance, or martial arts

This section promotes healthy lifestyles, perseverance, and teamwork.

3. Skills

Students develop a practical or creative skill outside of the classroom.
Examples include:

  • Music, art, coding, photography, or cooking

  • Learning a new language or technical skill

This section encourages creativity, independence, and lifelong learning.

4. Adventurous Journey

Students plan, train for, and complete a team expedition in a natural environment.
This includes:

  • Route planning and navigation

  • Teamwork and leadership

  • Camping and self-sufficiency

This section builds resilience, problem-solving skills, and confidence.

Award Levels

Students can progress through three levels, each with increasing commitment and challenge:

  • Bronze

  • Silver

  • Gold

Each level is designed to be achievable while encouraging personal growth and perseverance.

Why Should Students Take Part?

Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award helps students to:

  • Build confidence, independence, and resilience

  • Develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills

  • Enhance university and career applications

  • Make a meaningful contribution to their community

  • Step outside their comfort zone in a safe, supported environment

Most importantly, students gain a strong sense of achievement and pride in what they have accomplished.

Supporting #WorldReady Learners

Through service, challenge, and reflection, students become responsible, capable, and #worldready young people.
